UN Security Council: US ambassador said that she expects Moscow to behave “professionally” in the presidency while she remained doubtful about the same.
Russia “should not be” a permanent member of the UN Security Council, US ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said. “Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council. It shouldn’t be, because of what it is doing in Ukraine, but the (UN) charter does not allow for a change in its permanent membership,” Linda Thomas-Greenfield told AFP.
The US envoy is currently attending the democracy summit in Costa Rica. The remarks come as Russia is set to assume the rotating presidency of the Security Council this week for a month. US ambassador said that she expects Moscow to behave “professionally” in the presidency while she remained doubtful about the same.
“We also expect that they will also seek opportunities to advance their disinformation campaign against Ukraine, the United States and all of our allies,” she said.
“At every opportunity, we will raise our concerns about Russia’s actions,” she added. The US envoy also condemned Moscow’s “war crimes and human rights violations” in Ukraine as Kyiv marks the anniversary of killings in Bucha.
“The battle for the foundation of the free world is taking place on Ukrainian land. We will definitely win. Russian evil will fall, right here in Ukraine and will not be able to rise again,” Zelensky said marking the anniversary.
On China and Taiwan conflict, Linda Thomas-Greenfield said US respects the “One-China” policy, but Washington and Taipei have a “strong partnership”.
