German police arrest suspect after stabbing at Berlin Holocaust memorial

CNNBerlin police have arrested a suspect after a man was stabbed and seriously injured near the city’s Holocaust memorial on Friday night.

Authorities have yet to give details on the perpetrator or motive involved in the attack in the heart of the German capital, just two days ahead of a consequential national election.

While the center-right Christian Democratic Union is likely to top Sunday’s polls, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party could become the second-largest political group in the country – a first for a far-right party since the Nazi era.

“Our forces have arrested a suspect near the crime scene. The person is still being checked,” police said in a statement posted on X. They added the investigation is ongoing.

The victim was injured with a sharp object, police told CNN. Authorities believe the suspect acted alone, based on witness testimony.

The injured person was a 30-year-old Spanish tourist, the Associated Press reported, adding that the attack took place at 6 p.m. local time.

Police earlier said the incident at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe left one man “seriously injured by an unknown person.”

Considered one of Berlin’s most sacred sites, the memorial commemorates the 6 million Jews murdered by Nazi Germany during World War Two.
